HIP HOP FAIRYLAND

Hip Hop Fairyland is a partnership with Hip hop Scholastics, Oakland Children’s Fairyland, the City of Oakland, Oakland Unified, and several community service providers, artists and volunteers. The event highlights the importance of mental and oral health, both issues which currently disproportionately impact underserved BIPOC communities, and are not given enough attention when we consider health inequities. The event includes free dental screenings, health and benefits resource enrolments, hip hop, dance, beat making, golf, art, read alouds, and 500 free copies of the children’s book “The Dentist and the Fire Breathing Dragon” written by Sunspot Jonz which promotes literacy and oral health. This is a community event on the beautiful grounds of Children’s Fairyland inviting parents and children to a fun day of health, rhythm, and hope.

This event is inline with a citywide initiative to re-engage Oaklanders with the jewel at the heart of our city which is the breathtaking Lake Merritt. Children’s Fairyland as a venue holds a legendary space for many people that grew up in Oakland, as well as for those currently raising children here. It is a center of fun, of joy, of whimsy, and magic. It is also a space where we created this health fair to help lower income Black and Brown families who don't have access on a regular basis to connect to care, coverage, and resources all in a place and space that is culturally and linguistically affirming, validating and that fosters belonging, togetherness, and one that inspires collective action. This is Hip hop Fairyland.

This year Hip Hop Fairyland is a district wide "Back to School" event for Oakland Unified School District focusing on the following goals: Increased family engagement Pre-k to 3rd grade; Increased awareness about and access to Oral & Mental Health and free oral health screenings; Increased enrollment for health care, insurance, Calfresh, healthy eating, healthy living and well being. Improved school readiness such as required vaccines for school enrollment, and required dental and vision screening also necessary for school enrollment. Improved attendance in Elementary schools in Oakland for the first 10 days of school.
